Bluetooth Range Expanded: What This Means Going Foward
Whether its through your phone, tablet, or hands-free lighting control, there is a very high chance of you using Bluetooth® every day. Bluetooth® capabilities have become a cornerstone of our daily lives, so any expansion would most likely be a huge deal. Thankfully for the industrial sector, such an expansion was recently approved by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The technology, which is based on reliable wireless technology called Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), is poised to make a giant splash in the industrial and commercial sectors in the near future.
According to the official Bluetooth website SIG will now support a new type of capability, called BLE mesh networking. Instead of connecting a few devices together with Wi-Fi, which has the probability of incurring interference, mesh networking is able to connect thousands of devices to each other without having points of failure like Wi-Fi.
This is particularly helpful with Smart Lighting moving forward since most phones and tablets are already equipped with mesh networking. Equipping new fixtures with this technology could allow someone to control thousands of devices with the press of a finger on a screen. This could result in a huge push for industrial smart fixtures in the near future.
The best part of BLE mesh networking? It consumes less power than normal Bluetooth since it remains in sleep mode unless a connection is being made. That means it only uses power on your devices when you want it to. Combined with the more reliable addition of mesh, BLE mesh networking is a giant step in the direction of reliable wirelessly connected devices, particularly in the industrial sector.
While giant leaps in technology aren't as common anymore, this has the potential to buck the recent trend of smaller, more efficient improvements in technology. A more stable, energy efficient, and wider reaching Bluetooth network will benefit everyone involved, especially consumers and the industrial and commercial industries as a whole.
